It was built in the fifteenth year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1658), covering an area of 4.67 acres (1.89 hectares). The Sutra Collection Pavilion, newly built in 1922, is the temple's treasure house. Guiyuan Temple is a famous Chan Buddhist temple in China, known as one of the 'Four Great Jungles' of Wuhan, along with Baotong Temple, Lianxi Temple, and Gude Temple. The temple preserves many Buddhist relics and artworks, especially famous for its Five Hundred Arhat statues in the Arhat Hall.

It is one of the 'Four Great Buddhist Temples' of Wuhan. The temple was first built during the Liu Song dynasty of the Southern Dynasties (420-479 AD), initially named 'Dongshan Temple', and was renamed 'Mituo Temple' during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang (618-907 AD). During the Duanping era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1234-1236 AD), Emperor Lizong of Song bestowed the name 'Chongning Wanshou Chan Temple'. A seven-story pagoda was built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD). In the 14th year of Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty (1381 AD), Zhu Zhen, son of Zhu Yuanzhang, rebuilt the temple on Mount Hongshan. During the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty (1457 AD), Prince Zhu Jun'e added the Mahavira Hall. Baotong Temple was extensively expanded in 1485 and renamed 'Baotong Chan Temple', a name it has retained to this day. Existing main buildings include the Mountain Gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Patriarch Hall, Life Release Pond, Jade Buddha Hall, Chan Hall, Dharma Hall, Maitreya Hall, Reception Hall, etc. Among them, the Hongshan Pagoda, started in 1280 and completed in 1291, is a seven-story, 44.1-meter-high, octagonal brick and stone pagoda, and is an important historical relic within the temple.
